Here is what Dave Longley and his wife Christine had to say about this great day on the water:
WOW! What a day! We trolled Whiskey Gulch today and had one of the best days of fishing we've ever had (you've probably seen my report). That video system paid for itself today, I must say. We have some pretty nice footage of all four of those fish hitting the bait. The king Christine caught was the best. You can see it stalking the herring for about 6 or 7 seconds, then it makes 3 lunges at it and then finally connects and zips out of the picture. I actually had enough time to clue her in to the fact that she might want to get up and grab the rod. How cool can it get?
I was only running the flasher about 6 or 7 feet behind the downrigger weight/camera, and the herring about 30" behind the flasher. I was a bit worried about having everything so close to the weight/camera/bright yellow cable, but it sure didn't seem to bother anyone today. I was running it all that close because the water clarity through the camera really seems to suffer quite a bit beyond that. I think the first halibut we caught was with the flasher about 10 feet back and you don't see much more than a "shadow" when it grabs the herring. It's still pretty cool, though. With it shortened up it's still not really clear, but in the shot of the second halibut and the second king you can definitely see them mimicking the movement of the herring and also some fair detail---in fact you can see the halibut opening and closing it's mouth as it goes after the bait a number of times. In both shots there is no mistaking that the halibut is a halibut and the king is a king. What more can a guy (and a girl) ask for?
