Alaska Outdoor Journal's Photo of the Day!

King of the Hill!

Leroy Twitchell of Jerome, Idaho was out there on the Kenai last Sunday and was frequently in the same hole as my boat during the morning and afternoon fishing. He was accompanied by his brother Kyle, also of Jerome and their captain Sam Stephenson from Montana who just happened to bring the boat for their trip.

There was a BIG turnout on July 14th, a No Guide Sunday, where unguided anglers have an opportunity to fish the Kenai without the chaos of a guided fishing day. And yet the turnout was so huge we ended up creating our own organized and laid back chaos....ADFG counted 1588 private anglers on the river Sunday and since it looked like about 3 anglers per boat, that meant over 500 private boats indulged in the day. And hey, everyone did pretty good too....ADFG estimated we caught 1,102 fish and kept 794 of those kings. Leroy's boat got two that day with his 50 pounder taking the honors of the biggest one I saw landed that day.

Here's hoping his son back home has a chance to see dad in all his glory. heheh
