True Subsistence Fishermen!

With little doubt, the fishing bears of Wolverine Creek are some of the most entertaining animals we have in southcentral Alaska. This year is no exception when I spoke with Shelly at Talon Air, one of our sponsors who offers a combination salmon fishing and bear viewing experience all summer long. She said the bears are really getting into the diving mode this year jumping from the boulders and submerged rocks for the fish as the schools past by. You won't be alone since last year 9000 people visited this area for the fishing and bear viewing or just as a bear viewing outing. But when you get a photo like this, hey, it don't get any better, eh? No matter what the crowds are like. Talon Air should be able to accommodate folks on short notice for booking a trip to Wolverine Creek. And the "show" continues to the end of August as the sockeye eventually move upstream and the silver salmon replace them in this area for fishing opportunities. Limits are 3 fish per day. Click their ad at the right for details and contact info.

This great perspective shot was taken by Gordon Krantz (an AOJ regular), who with his wife Nancy, spent the last days of June up here taking in the bounty of Alaska. He released a monster 53 inch Kenai king, while his wife helped fill their fish box for their trip back to Texas with an 80 pound halibut out of Kodiak. They also had a fin whale nearly within touching distance from their halibut boat on that trip - a very unusual experience to say the least. (Can you spot all 3 bears?)
