Fall Provides Rainbows on the Kenai! September....The upper Kenai River between Kenai and Skilak Lakes is well-known for its trophy rainbow trout and excellent Dolly Varden fishing. But the Kenai has some excellent fishing for rainbows and dollies throughout its drainage beginning June 15th when the season opens. The area below Skilak Lake has become quite popular as another excellent trout fishery and although this part of the river allows retention of one rainbow over 20 inches in length, 99% of all anglers who fish this river will return their catch to fight again and provide another angler an exceptional photo op like this one. Lee and Mary Carroll are Texans who can never get enough of Alaska and are getting to be very regular visitors. They recently spent some time at the Holly House on the Peninsula, deciding to experience the fall fishing and less crowded sightseeing Alaska has to offer in September. They wrote AOJ about their trip and made me jealous with all the whales, otters and sealife they saw on trips to Seldovia and the Kenai Fjords as well as other wildlife viewing on the Peninsula. But these folks are anglers too! And here is the result of a trout fishing trip on the Kenai between Sterling and Skilak during the second week of September. This rainbow measured 26 inches (released) as was probably between 8 and 9+ pounds. 'Bows and Dollies are gorging themselves on sockeye and silver salmon spawned eggs and this fish will probably put on another pound or two before winter sets in. It was a memorable day but not entirely untypical for this time of year. Its all in the timing!! Photo Courtesy of AOJ sponsor: Holly House Bed & Breakfast
