Alaska's Newest Waterfowler

The opener of this year's Alaska waterfowl season was the first for duck hunter Marylin Murphy of Nikiski. Although she has lived in Alaska most of her life, participating in hunting never quite made her "things to do list" until now.

The smile reflects her pride in the accomplishment as she displays her first-ever duck, a "handsome" widgeon. Even the mile and a half walk out to the hunting site twice a day, packing gun, shells and gear across the flats was not a deterrent for her enthusiasm of this newfound sport.

The trip was about as good as it could get for any first timer. The group she was with flew into a remote location and bagged whitefronts and canada geese, a couple of sandhill cranes and carrying straps full of ducks. There was little doubt she was infected with "duck fever" and looks forward to the next hunting opportunity....as soon as her sore shoulder gets better. :-)

Editor's Note: And she's the best gourmet cook any hunting camp could ask for. I think everyone gained weight on this trip.
