Ah the THRILL of Victory and the AGONY of Defeat! Both are experienced every year in the Land of the Midnight Sun. No one can dispute the fact that Alaska is the sport fishing capital of the world. And for good reason. Many of the saltwater sport fleets measure their halibut catch in hundreds of tons per season. And each year hundreds of thousands of salmon are harvested by sport anglers and subsistance users for the table. With a tourism industry centered around sport fishing, it is not surprising that there are many fishing derbies held throughout the state. And each year tens of thousands of dollars are awarded lucky anglers from Sitka to Kotzebue. Alaska is home to some of the most rewarding fishing derbies in the world. Where else could anyone from 5 years old to a hundred have an equal shot at taking home a check for $100,000 or finding yourself $30,000 richer with 300 pounds of prime halibut fillets to boot? But, there is a sad side to the story too. Nearly every derby official can recall times when a fish large enough to win was caught by anglers who did not purchase a derby ticket before going fishing. Nothing can be more disheartening than to catch a prize-winning fish without having spent $5 to $10 for a ticket. Just ask the several anglers who missed out on the $32,000 prize in the 1996 Homer Halibut Derby when they came back to the dock with a fish large enough to have won the jackpot. Here is a list of those derbies we have identified so far. Those with links will take you to a description of the event, the time its held, its rules and prizes awarded. Anchorage Area
